The Outlier is Africa’s leading data newsletter, created by Laura Grant and Alastair Otter in July 2021.

During the COVID-19 pandemic Laura and Alastair built one of the most extensive dashboards on COVID-19 data in the country and funded it through a crowdfunding campaign.

In mid-2021 The Outlier was created to continue to produce unique data-drive stories and tools as well as share skills and techniques to help anyone improve their communication with data.

🤓 Today The Outlier is sent to more than 11,000 readers, more than 60% of whom work with data in their jobs.

👍 In our January 2025 reader survey 93% of respondents said they would recommend The Outlier to a friend or colleague (NPS).

📭 We have published more than 100 editions of the newsletter to date and have an open rate of +45% for each issue.

📊 We have also published more than 650 charts published in The Outlier’s Our World in Charts collection. More than 50 other publishers, companies and research organisations have republished or referenced The Outlier in the past year.

🏆 The Outlier has won more than a dozen national and international awards for journalism and data visualisation.
